Saint Peter’s University President, Eugene J. Cornacchia Ph.D., announced in an email to the SPU community that the university plans to open the campus in the fall semester and that summer courses will take place online.

Cornacchia also mentioned that new safety guidelines are likely to be implemented if the campus reopens, such as utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE), campus testing, the redesign of classrooms, offices and the dining hall and/or staggered schedules. Cornacchia also announced a limitation on large gatherings.

This announcement comes after weeks of deliberation by SPU’s “Emergency Decision Team” which went over how to reopen the campus as well as how to implement these new guidelines to prevent the further spread of COVID-19.

Along with these guidelines, Cornacchia announced that a pass/fail option will be available for students taking summer courses.

However, the Emergency Decision Team is still observing the situation. Cornacchia stated in the email that the plan may evolve if the pandemic worsens.

“[The plan] will remain guided by our dedication to protecting the health and safety of students, faculty, staff and administrators, providing exemplary learning experiences and maintaining our Peacock Pride,” said Cornacchia.

According to the email, the Emergency Decision Team will be in regular contact with Governor Phil Murphy’s office, the Secretary of Higher Education and other federal and local offices to ensure a safe return to campus and to possibly change course in the event of a second wave of infection.

Cornacchia concluded the email by saying that more news of the University’s plans for the fall semester will come in the next few weeks, and that students should keep an eye on their emails during the summer.

“Despite our current environment, I am confident that each and every one of you will finish the current term strong,” Cornacchia said. “Your perseverance in the face of adversity has been nothing short of amazing and inspiring.”

This comes after Cornacchia announced that SPU will be furloughing 45 employees and will cut salaries.emergency
